Installing Downloaded Apps

You download a DMG file, double click it to “mount” the disk image, and up pops a window that usually contains instructions to drag the app to your applications folder. Fine, I click the Finder in the dock to access my Applications folder and nothing happens because I’m already IN the Finder! THIS is supposed to be intuitive? I must be missing something obvious.

  1. OK so I AM missing something, although I wouldn’t call it obvious. If you open a Finder window, select your Applications icon in the sidebar, then drag the window’s proxy icon (the little icon in the title bar) to the right side of the dock, you now have immediate access to the Applications folder!

IMHO, it might be a good idea for Apple to include the Applications folder on the dock by default. Then the process of installing downloaded apps might be more obvious to new users.
